Coinbase Commerce is gone. Its best idea does not have to be.

Coinbase Commerce stopped for every merchant on 31 March 2026. Coinbase's transition page is blunt about it: the portal became permanently inaccessible after that date, and as of August 2026 the old dashboard redirects to Coinbase Business while the Commerce API answers with errors. What made Commerce special, and what its successor deliberately dropped, was self-custody: hundreds of assets settling to wallets the merchant controlled, with no business verification to start. That model is the one NoHoldPay runs.

What replaced Commerce, property by property

Coinbase's own transition page compares Commerce with Coinbase Business, and it describes the regression plainly: Commerce was self-custodial, Business is custodial only, holding funds on the merchant's behalf. Coinbase also acknowledges directly that some merchants valued the self-custodial, any-asset nature of Commerce and that Business may not be the right fit for everyone. The table below reads Coinbase's comparison alongside ours, checked August 2026.

If you ran Commerce, the migration is familiar ground

Commerce merchants already know the non-custodial rhythm: connect wallet material, hand the customer a hosted checkout, consume a webhook. The same three moves work here. Add your wallets (an extended public key for Bitcoin-family chains, addresses for account chains, a Monero view key if you accept it), install the WooCommerce or OpenCart plugin or call the Merchant API, and register the signed webhook. Payments confirm on-chain into your wallets, orders advance, and there is no payout queue because there is nothing to pay out. Pricing is 0.5% per confirmed payment.

Two things will feel broader than Commerce. Coverage spans 14 mainnet chains, including Monero, XRP, Stellar, and TON, none of which Coinbase Business accepts today with its USDC-centered payment acceptance. And on eligible stablecoin routes, customers without a gas token can pay through gasless checkout, which has no Commerce precedent at all.

When Coinbase Business is the right answer instead

If your business is a US or Singapore entity, wants a custodial account with trading and treasury features under a brand your finance team already trusts, and USDC-centered acceptance covers your customers, Coinbase Business is a reasonable home, and moving there is the lowest-friction path Coinbase offers. This page is for the merchants the transition left out: everyone outside those two countries as of August 2026, and everyone who chose Commerce precisely because it did not hold their money.

Common questions

Did Coinbase Commerce shut down only for international merchants?
No. The 31 March 2026 cutoff applied to every merchant. US and Singapore businesses were offered a transition to Coinbase Business, while merchants elsewhere were told to move to an alternative provider. The Commerce portal itself became permanently inaccessible for everyone.
Can I still get funds out of my old Commerce account?
Coinbase's transition page states the portal, including the front end of its withdrawal tool, is permanently inaccessible after the deadline. Historical questions about a specific account are Coinbase support territory. Funds you had already settled to your own wallets were never affected, and that is the property to keep in your next gateway.
Is NoHoldPay a drop-in replacement for the Commerce API?
The shape is familiar, not identical: create a payment server-side, redirect to a hosted checkout, consume a signed webhook. A Commerce integration usually ports in a day or two. The WooCommerce and OpenCart plugins skip the code entirely for stores on those platforms.
How does NoHoldPay differ from the other Commerce alternatives?
Most gateways that court ex-Commerce merchants receive funds into platform-controlled addresses or balances first, then settle or let you withdraw. That is the model Commerce specifically avoided. NoHoldPay keeps the Commerce property: settlement lands at addresses derived from your own wallet material, with no platform balance at any point.
