Best Coinbase Commerce alternatives in 2026

Coinbase Commerce defined a category: self-custodial acceptance of hundreds of assets, open globally, no business verification. It closed for every merchant on 31 March 2026, and its successor keeps none of those properties: Coinbase Business describes itself as custodial, centers payment acceptance on USDC, and serves US and Singapore entities only as of August 2026. Anyone shopping for a replacement is really asking which gateway keeps what Commerce the product actually was, rather than which one wears the most familiar brand. That is how this list is ranked.

Methodology, visibly: we publish NoHoldPay and rank it first, every competitor claim below reads from that provider's own published documents as of 5 August 2026, and each provider gets the niche where it is the honest best pick. Weigh our first place with that bias in mind.

What Commerce merchants actually lost

Coinbase's own transition page is the source: Commerce was self-custodial and any-asset with no KYB, Coinbase Business is custodial only, and Coinbase acknowledges directly that some merchants valued the self-custodial, any-asset nature of Commerce and that Business may not be the right fit for everyone. Add geography, US and Singapore entities only as of August 2026, and the majority of the old Commerce base was not offered a successor at all. The ranking above scores each alternative against those three lost properties, because they are what the query behind this page is really asking for.

1. NoHoldPay: the self-custodial successor

Scores on all three lost properties. Self-custody: every payment settles to addresses derived from your wallet material, xpubs on Bitcoin-family chains, per-payment forwarders locked to your treasury on contract chains, your own tagged accounts on XRP, Stellar, and TON, a view key for Monero. Assets: 14 chains and 33 routes, wider than Commerce in the directions that matter to its old base, including the privacy and reference chains Coinbase never carried. Onboarding: an email and a wallet, globally. The fee is 0.5% with no fixed component. A $50 signup credit covers roughly your first $10,000 of volume. Beyond parity, two things Commerce never had: gasless stablecoin checkout on eligible routes, and a Recovery Kit that re-derives every forwarder address with the platform gone. Honest limits: no fiat settlement, no Lightning, two store plugins. The migration guide maps the old Commerce concepts onto ours one by one.

2. BTCPay Server: fuller sovereignty, more ops

The only option here more sovereign than Commerce was: free, open source, self-hosted, no platform anywhere in the path, with mature Lightning and native subscriptions. The costs are a server of your own at 10 to 70 dollars monthly by their own docs, ongoing maintenance, and Bitcoin-first coverage with community plugins beyond it. Ex-Commerce merchants who left because they distrust platforms categorically should start here and accept the ops. Those who left because Coinbase closed a product they liked usually want the managed version, which is the divide our BTCPay comparison is honest about.

3. CoinGate and 4. BitPay: the licensed custodial routes

Both abandon Commerce's custody model deliberately in exchange for fiat. CoinGate settles euros, dollars, and pounds from a MiCA-licensed Lithuanian institution at a published 1 percent, with full KYB before the first payment and no USDT since 2025. BitPay settles to banks in 37 countries at tiered 1 to 2 percent plus 25 cents, with business verification and, per its own support docs, an account and identity check for the paying customer. For merchants whose real requirement was always money in the bank, these are the two serious candidates, EU-licensed and US-incumbent respectively, and our CoinGate and BitPay pages price each against keeping crypto.

5. NOWPayments: breadth, for the merchants it still serves

Closest to Commerce's any-asset property: hundreds of currencies, auto-conversion, mass payouts, wide plugin coverage, and volume discounts. Two dated caveats decide whether it belongs on your shortlist. Their April 2026 terms exclude EU, UK, and US residents, which rules out much of the ex-Commerce base. And on the property this page ranks by, their own documents describe custody three conflicting ways, quoted in our NOWPayments comparison. Merchants outside the excluded regions who weight breadth over custody certainty keep it in play.

Common questions

Is Coinbase Business a Coinbase Commerce alternative?
Only for US and Singapore entities that accept the model change. By Coinbase's own comparison it is custodial where Commerce was self-custodial, and payment acceptance centers on USDC where Commerce took hundreds of assets. For merchants elsewhere, or merchants who chose Commerce for self-custody, it is a different product, and this list exists because of that.
Which alternative is closest to how Commerce actually worked?
NoHoldPay and BTCPay Server both keep the defining property, settlement to wallets you control with no platform KYB. BTCPay is more sovereign and asks you to run the infrastructure. NoHoldPay is managed and multi-chain. The custodial options on this list are for merchants whose requirement was actually fiat, not self-custody.
Can I still recover funds from my old Commerce account?
Coinbase's transition page says the portal became permanently inaccessible after 31 March 2026, including its withdrawal tooling's front end. Questions about a specific account are for Coinbase support. Funds you had already settled to your own wallets were never affected, which is the property worth ranking alternatives by.
Do any alternatives support the coins Commerce did not?
Yes. Commerce never carried Monero, and NoHoldPay accepts it through view-key observation, alongside XRP, Stellar, and TON. NOWPayments' list of hundreds also extends past Commerce's in raw count. Match the list against what your customers actually pay with rather than the biggest number.

Sourcing: the Commerce shutdown facts and the Coinbase Business properties are from Coinbase's own transition and business pages plus live endpoint probes, and every claim about the four alternatives is from that provider's published documents, all read 5 August 2026 and re-verified quarterly. Live pages win over this one.
